Sauna lectures

DO TANK revises the Finnish tradition of combining political discussions with sauna culture.  We invited two artists and a collective to share their social utopias in the heat of Arla, the 83-year-old city sauna. Besides the lectures there is a photographic exhibition by Juuso Noronkoski shown in the sauna building.

Sauna lecture 1:  Kviss Búmm Bang (ISL): Idealists and fools?

Kviss Búmm Bang points a moralistic finger on the dilemma they are facing as artists with a political agenda: post-modern society does not tolerate fixed viewpoints. They have dealt with topics such as gender issues and prostitution and will share their experience with curators and audience alike, talking about the walls and the fences that have been put up in order to keep people away from challenging status quo, changing "normality".

Kviss Búmm Bang

Kviss búmm bang consists of three founders and members, Eva Björk Kaaber, Eva Rún Snorradóttir and Vilborg Ólafsdóttir. They have been working together since 2009, making so-called extended life performances. Their work is about researching reality, what's normal and what's not, in hope to get people to question their everyday realities in order to realize the extent of their own influence on it. Their latest work, Downtown 24/7 was made in collaboration with Aðalbjörg Þóra Árnadóttir.

Sauna lecture 2: Barbara Balsei (GER): Just Imagine

Let's assume that all the things we can see and all sentences we can speak in a certain space and time are contingent. Yet we watch and talk specifically. Let’s suppose that all we see and say together is the epoch we live in. A dialectic alliance between society and individual. I ask myself: Why then shouldn’t it be possible to change the world with thinking? And speaking? In the centre of it all: the body. Our eyes watching, our mouth giving words a shape. In this contingent living situation the body once again becomes a site from where critical statements might make a lot of sense - and give us a certain, hard to describe and in an almost literally sense u-topian, treat. Jouissance? Not every body, but the body that exposes itself during the fatal act of trying to speak. Not to speak anything, but to speak out. There is a body and it makes a statement. Just imagine.

Barbara Balsei is writing and working in the fields of theatre and science. Her interest is upon finding formats for abstract thoughts and concrete stories. She is searching for alingnment lines between Speaking and Being, between Text and Body, between the Subjectivity of the one speaking body and the Structure of Words in a shared place. Intellectual references to poststructural philosophy and psychoanalysis.

Sauna lecture 3:  Mårten Spångberg (SWE): Amphiboly

Mårten Spångberg will explore possibilities of a theatre that is itself and enjoys it, that is rich enough to not tell the audience what to do or feel, but instead engage with the horizon, a horizon that is beyond perspective and openness. It's dark and doesn't reflect, yet it is erotic.
